This morning, I hosted H.E. Ibrar Hussain Khan, the High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Kenya, for a courtesy call at my office in Parliament Buildings.
During our meeting, the High Commissioner briefed me on the current status of the Indo-Pakistani conflict along the international border.
While a ceasefire is in place, he noted that tensions remain high and the situation remains fragile.
I emphasized the need for restraint and urged all parties to pursue peaceful and diplomatic solutions.
Pakistan is a key trade partner for Kenya, particularly as our largest importer of tea, and any escalation could significantly affect our economy.
I also shared my concern that war, wherever it occurs, disproportionately harms vulnerable communities who often have the least protection and the fewest options.
I was, however, encouraged by the steps being taken by both nations toward de-escalation and dialogue.
Joining us for the meeting were representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Mr. Steve Apopo, Director of the Speaker’s Office.
